Taiwan is a flourishing Democracy and an economic success story. Just one company, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), produces a significant majority of the world’s semiconductor chips. The island is a bastion of freedom against the PRCs assertive presence in the region. The PRC is becoming increasingly bellicose under Wi Jinping, insisting that the island is part of the PRC. The US, in turn, treats the issue of One China in vague terms but hints at the need to preserve Taiwan as the bastion of freedom. Should China blockade the island or mount an invasion, it could easily create a chain reaction escalating to regional and perhaps global war. The author, Professor Kerry Brown, Director of the Lau China Institute at King’s College in London, helps us understand how and why we’ve arrived at this dangerous moment in history.
