SUMMARY:National Defense Briefing Series
DESCRIPTION:Great Power Competition – Sea Power Perspective\n\n\n\n\n\nOctober 26\, 2025 \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSince World War II\, the U.S. Navy has been the dominant sea power and one of its primary missions is ensuring that every nation has freedom to ship goods on the world’s oceans. The on-going attempt by the Houthis to shut down merchant ship traffic through the Red Sea\, Russia’s deployment of ships into the Atlantic and Pacific and Iran’s threats to close the Straits of Hormuz is a political\, military and economic challenge. Since 90% of the worlds goods that move between continents goes by sea\, the actions of the Houthis and rapid growth of the People’s Republic of China’s Navy and its aggressive behavior in Asia and Africa has once again raised the issue of sea power and its importance.

SUMMARY:Military History Book Club: Seeds of Victory
DESCRIPTION:Seeds of Victory: Defeat & Triumph  by  James Ellman\nPlease arrive by 7:15 a.m. to order from the menu.  Breakfast is $20.  Discussion starts at 7:30 and ends at 9:00. \nThe discussion will be guided by John Caldwell: CPA\, 9 Marathons (PB 3:15)  and  Robert Epstein: Texas Guard- Military Police Brigade; 20 years law enforcement \nLike all armed forces\, the United States military–often celebrated for its victories–has been defeated on the battlefield throughout its long history. Unlike some others\, the United States has shown a remarkable ability to bounce back from defeat: to learn from the loss\, recover\, and turn it into victory. In this book James Ellman\, who has established a reputation for his reconsiderations of military history\, takes a close look at nine such pivot points on the ground\, in the air\, and at sea\, from the American Revolution through the Korean War: \n \n\n-Long Island (1776) to Saratoga (1777)\n-Invasion of Canada (1812) to Battle of Lake Erie (1813)\n-First Bull Run (1861) to Antietam (1862)\n-Pearl Harbor (1941) to Midway (1942)\n-Luzon (1942) to Buna-Gona (1943)\n-Schweinfurt/Ploesti (1943) to “Big Week” (1944)\n-Chongchon (1950) to Operation Ripper (1951)\n\n  \nIn brisk narratives\, Ellman describes each battle\, explaining how it was fought and lost\, and then shifts gears to detail how leaders–military as well as civilian–such as George Washington\, Abraham Lincoln\, Douglas MacArthur\, Dwight Eisenhower\, and George Patton assessed the factors that led to defeat\, made changes to training\, tactics\, and strategy\, and entered the next battle wiser and better prepared. Ellman finally recounts the subsequent battle\, focusing on how it was shaped by what came before and how the victory was gained. \nAs this book makes clear\, the history of the United States at war is\, to a surprising degree\, the story of tenacity in the wake of defeat\, of flexibility and adaptability on the path to victory. This is essential reading for understanding how battles are lost and won.  \nRSVP to Bob Epstein at: macabee1948@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Military History Book Club
DESCRIPTION: “The Sword of Freedom” by former Mossad chief Yossi Cohen\nPrestonwood CC\, 15909 Preston Road\, Dallas\, TX. Please arrive by 7:15 a.m. to order from the menu. \nBreakfast is $20.  Discussion starts at 7:30 and ends at 9:00. \nThe discussion will be guided by co-Chairmen – John Caldwell: CPA\, 9 Marathons (PB 3:15)  &  Robert Epstein: Texas Guard- Military Police Brigade; 20 years law enforcement                                  \nIsrael has always won. They are winning now. And they must always win in the future. \nIn The Sword of Freedom\, former Mossad chief Yossi Cohen pulls back the curtain on Israel’s success in the face of never-ending war. Cohen has played a pivotal role in shaping Israel’s modern defense strategy. Blending personal stories and the nation’s history\, he offers a rare glimpse into how Israel has defied existential threats and built a cutting-edge defense system. He reveals how Israel always finds a way to win\, as well as: \n  \n\nHow Israel succeeds as a nation and military power\nThe future of Gaza and Hamas\nWhat it takes to be in the Mossad\nThe mistakes Westerners make about the Middle East\nHow Mossad helps counter terrorism around the world\nHow the art of spy craft has changed in the advent of AI and social media\nWhat Donald Trump’s second presidency means for Israel\n\n  \nIn today’s volatile world\, Israel must remain adaptable and resolute to survive. Cohen explores how Israel achieves this: by questioning all intelligence\, prioritizing human ingenuity\, cooperating with other countries (even ones you might not expect)\, and ensuring enemies fear defeat before battles begin. \nAs David Ben-Gurion observed\, “History is not written\, it is created.” From thrilling covert operations to strategies that safeguard borders\, The Sword of Freedom demonstrates how Israel’s transformation from a vulnerable state to a global power was no accident. \nRSVP to Bob Epstein at: macabee1948@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Military History Book Club February 12
DESCRIPTION:Grey Wars – A Contemporary History of U.S. Special Operations\nby N.W. Collins\n \nThe discussion will be guided by Rear Admiral Gary Rosholt\, a 35-year US Navy SEAL (Ret) with his Flag Officer tours as the Deputy Commanding General\, Special Operations Command\, U.S. Central Command and Senior Defense Official / Defense Attache\, U.S. Embassy United Arab Emirates along with Robert Epstein: Texas Guard – Military Police Brigade; 20 years law enforcement\nWhat’s it about? \nA comprehensive analysis of U.S. Special Operations Forces in 21st-century warfare\, examining their everyday reality in national security while respecting classified information and sensitive operational details. \nAuthor’s Note from Grey Wars: A lot is missing from this book—deliberately. \nThis book is intended for readers who seek a deeper understanding of U.S. Special Operations and the forces at the center of America’s 21st-century wars. Violence on behalf of the nation by sacred trust\, sums up one military leader. Rings of sorrow\, paraphrases another. While fighting matters evoke raw sentiment—and rightly so—the focus here is on the everyday reality of national security\, not the extremes. \nI set out—and received authorization—to conduct this research across the interagency. Throughout\, I adhere strictly to the classifications of national security and to the core values of academia to respect confidential sources and sensitive information. Upon completion\, this book was reviewed in its entirety by the U.S. Department of Defense\, Office of Prepublication and Security Review\, and other governmental agencies. \nRSVP to Bob Epstein at: macabee1948@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Military History Book Club March 2026
DESCRIPTION:Military History Book Club\nSponsored by North Texas Audie Murphy Chapter\,\nMilitary Order of World Wars\, & Jewish War Veterans\nAn authoritative history of Europe’s most significant military conflict since World War II. Despite repeated warnings from the White House\, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 shocked the world. Why did Putin start the war—and why has it unfolded in previously unimaginable ways? Ukrainians have resisted a superior military; the West has united\, while Russia grows increasingly isolated. Serhii Plokhy\, a leading historian of Ukraine and the Cold War\, offers a definitive account of this conflict\, its origins\, course\, and the already apparent and possible future consequences. Though the current war began eight years before the all-out assault—on February 27\, 2014\, when Russian armed forces seized the Crimean parliament—the roots of this conflict can be traced even further back\, to post-Soviet tensions and imperial collapse in the 19th and 20th centuries. By providing a broad historical context and examining Ukraine and Russia’s ideas and cultures\, as well as domestic and international politics\, Plokhy reveals that while this new Cold War was not inevitable\, it was predictable. Ukraine\, Plokhy argues\, has remained central to Russia’s idea of itself even as Ukrainians have followed a radically different path. \nRSVP: macabee1948@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Military History Book Club “Army History”
DESCRIPTION:LTC (Ret) Carl D. Wiley: U.S. Army (Ret) & DoD Civil (Ret) – Moderator: \nCarl is a combat veteran of Desert Shield/Storm\, the Gulf War\, Operation Joint Endeavor\, Former Yugoslavia\, who retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel and Government Civil Service after 40 years of service. He is a senior Army aviator with over 1000 hours in helicopters\, a paratrooper\, a cavalryman\, and a maintenance test pilot. He currently serves as the Second Vice-Commander for the Dallas – Military Order of World Wars chapter. Carl speaks on military history from World War I to the current day\, as well as selected topics on logistics and military deployments. \nPlease arrive by 7:30 AM\, to order from the menu. Breakfast is $15. Discussion begins at 7:30 and ends no later than 9:00 \nWere World Wars I and II Inevitable? Where the Necessary Wars? Or were they products of calamitous failures of judgment? The author makes the case that\, if not for the blunders of British statesman – Winston Churchill first among them – the horrors of two world wars and the Holocaust might have been avoided and the British Empire might never have collapsed into ruins. Half a century of murderous oppression of scores of millions under the iron boot of Communism tyranny might never have happened\, and Europe’s central role in world affairs might have been sustained for many generations. \nRSVP: Bob Epstein\, macabee1948@gmail.com
