Since 90% of the worlds goods that move between continents goes by sea\, the actions of the Houthis and rapid growth of the People’s Republic of China’s Navy and its aggressive behavior in Asia and Africa has once again raised the issue of sea power and its importance.

DESCRIPTION:The Congressional Veteran Commendation is a nomination-based program designed to recognize both the military service and community service of Veterans living in the 3rd Congressional District of Texas. These honorees are exceptional Americans who served our country as a former member of the United States Armed Forces (Army\, Navy\, Air Force\, Marine Corps\, Space Force and Coast Guard). \nThe nomination packet may be self-submitted by the Veteran or submitted by a nominator acting with permission on the Veteran’s behalf. Applications should highlight community service and/or work experience that has had a positive impact on the community since discharge. A Review Board will review the packets and make recommendations to the Congressman.  \nThe 2025 Congressional Veteran Commendation Recipients will be honored in a ceremony on Saturday\, November 8th\, 2025\, at Heritage Ranch Country Club from 10:00AM – 12:00PM.  \nELIGIBILTY:\n• Veteran must currently reside in the 3rd Congressional District of Texas. LEON A. JOHNSON \n  \nLeon Johnson retired from the U.S. Air Force with the rank of brigadier general after 33 years of service. During his AF career\, General Johnson commanded a fighter squadron\, fighter group\, was the Vice Commander of 10th Air Force at the Joint Reserve Base in Ft. Worth\, TX and served as Mobilization Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force. He was a Distinguished AFROTC graduate from Oregon State University. General Johnson was a command pilot with over 3500 hours of military flying time in the T-37 trainer\, A-37\, and A-10 fighter aircraft including missions over Bosnia in support of Operation Deny Flight. Following the events of 9/11\, the general served as a Director of the Air Force Crisis Action Team in the Pentagon. His military awards include the Distinguished Service Medal and Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster. In 2009 General Johnson was selected as a Trustee of the U.S. Air Force Academy Falcon Foundation. In 2011 General Johnson was awarded a Doctorate in Humane Letters by Tuskegee University. In 2013 the General concluded a six-year appointment as a member of the U.S. National Academies of Science\, Engineering\, and Medicine (NASEM)\, Naval Studies Board. He continues to serve on study committees and roundtables for NASEM. In November 2017\, he concluded his second three-year term as a Secretary of the Air Force appointee to the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Board of Governors (BOG). In April 2018 General Johnson was selected to be an Emeritus Member of the CAP BOG. In 2019 he was selected to be a Trustee of the CAP Foundation. In 2019 he received the FAA Wright Brothers “Master Pilot” Award for 50 years of safe flying. General Johnson worked at United Parcel Service Airlines for 20 years. He was the chief pilot responsible for all air operations in the western half of the United States\, North and South Pacific\, all of Asia\, and the Middle East. He was also a human resources manager responsible for employee relations\, work force development\, and employment for UPS Airline. During World War II\, his father served in the American Red Cross with troops overseas. Don’s mother lived in Daytona Beach\, Florida\, with Don and his older brother Bill. Following the war\, the reunited Munson family\, now including his younger sister Ann\, was stationed near military bases in several deep South states. \nDon spent formative years in Biloxi\, Mississippi\, where he graduated from high school in 1956. Don’s high school activities include the Order of DeMolay\, student government\, sports\, theater\, and broadcasting at the WLOX radio station. Don was selected to attend the leadership training program Mississippi Boys State following his junior year. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Daniel “Dan” Edelman retired as Chancellor at Montana State University\, Billings. His responsibilities included transforming and leading both a traditional university and a two-year community college. As a first-generation college student\, he strove to provide opportunities to veterans\, Native Americans\, and other underserved populations. He has helped countless students pursue their dreams. Serving in higher education for over 25 years\, other senior roles include Chief Financial Officer at the University of North Texas at Dallas and Associate Chief Academic Officer at East Texas A&M University. He is also a twice-tenured professor of accounting. Furthering his commitment towards public service\, he joined the US Department of Justice as a Forensic Financial Investigator\, immediately following 9/11. Additionally\, he was an entrepreneur with two businesses: one in public accounting and the other in finance. \nHe began his journey by enlisting in the US Army immediately after his seventeenth birthday. Trained in military intelligence\, he served as the Noncommissioned Officer in Charge\, S2\, 1st Military Intelligence Battalion\, 1st Infantry Division. During his second deployment to Europe during the Cold War\, he was seriously injured\, he left the service following three years on active duty. \nHe earned a bachelor’s degree in Business from Loyola University\, a Master of Science in Accounting degree\, and a Doctorate o Philosophy from the Illinois Institute of Technology. He earned five professional certifications (Certified Public Accountant\, Certified Fraud Examiner\, Certified in Financial Forensics\, Chartered Global Accountant\, and Certified Information Professional). \nDr. Edelman received a Tribute in the United States Senate for his contributions to higher education and the nation. His dedication\, support\, and commitment towards veterans and underserved populations was highlighted. \nHe is happily married to his wife Sandee and resides in McKinney\, TX. Combined they have three sons and six grandchildren.

Chairperson of the Patriotism for Jewish War Veterans Association. Major Supporter of the Texas Rangers Association Foundation. The audience will learn how what differentiates U.S. Special Operations from those of our allies and those of the People’s Republic of China\, Russia\, North Korea and Iran. \nGary Rosholt is currently the President\, L3 Technologies Saudi Arabia LLC and Corporate Vice President\, Middle East Operations. In these roles\, he is responsible for all aspects of the company’s business interests in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East region\, including strategy\, operations\, and growth\, including the successful execution of ongoing business. \nIn 2015\, he completed more than 35 years of active and reserve military service as a US Navy SEAL and retired as a Rear Admiral (upper half).  Highlighting his career were assignments as the Senior Defense Official/Defense Attaché in the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi and Deputy Commanding General for the Special Operations Command for the United States Central Command. \nOperational assignments included deployments with Underwater Demolition Teams\, SEAL Teams\, and Special Boat Units to the Western Pacific and Middle East.  In his earlier civilian career\, he was a consultant for 15-years focusing on US Special Operations-peculiar research\, development\, and acquisition programs. \nRosholt graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a degree in Electrical Engineering and completed his Master of Science degree in Operations Management from the University of Arkansas. Despite repeated warnings from the White House\, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 shocked the world. Why did Putin start the war—and why has it unfolded in previously unimaginable ways? Ukrainians have resisted a superior military; the West has united\, while Russia grows increasingly isolated. Serhii Plokhy\, a leading historian of Ukraine and the Cold War\, offers a definitive account of this conflict\, its origins\, course\, and the already apparent and possible future consequences. Though the current war began eight years before the all-out assault—on February 27\, 2014\, when Russian armed forces seized the Crimean parliament—the roots of this conflict can be traced even further back\, to post-Soviet tensions and imperial collapse in the 19th and 20th centuries. Wiley: U.S. Army (Ret) & DoD Civil (Ret) – Moderator: \nCarl is a combat veteran of Desert Shield/Storm\, the Gulf War\, Operation Joint Endeavor\, Former Yugoslavia\, who retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel and Government Civil Service after 40 years of service. He is a senior Army aviator with over 1000 hours in helicopters\, a paratrooper\, a cavalryman\, and a maintenance test pilot. He currently serves as the Second Vice-Commander for the Dallas – Military Order of World Wars chapter. Carl speaks on military history from World War I to the current day\, as well as selected topics on logistics and military deployments. \nPlease arrive by 7:30 AM\, to order from the menu. Breakfast is $15. Discussion begins at 7:30 and ends no later than 9:00 \nWere World Wars I and II Inevitable? Where the Necessary Wars? Or were they products of calamitous failures of judgment? The author makes the case that\, if not for the blunders of British statesman – Winston Churchill first among them – the horrors of two world wars and the Holocaust might have been avoided and the British Empire might never have collapsed into ruins.
