Just one company\, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC)\, produces a significant majority of the world’s semiconductor chips. The island is a bastion of freedom against the PRCs assertive presence in the region. The PRC is becoming increasingly bellicose under Wi Jinping\, insisting that the island is part of the PRC. This book is a comprehensive history of the war\, arguing that one of the main reasons for the Taliban’s success was their deep connection to the religious and social identity of Afghanistan\, and that the inability of the American-supported Afghan government to attract popular support and retain control of the country was due to Afghans’ viewing the American military as a foreign occupying power. “The very presence of Americans in Afghanistan trod on what it meant to be Afghan… Any Afghan government\, however good\, however democratic\, was going to be imperiled as long as it was aligned with the United States.”  \nCarter Malkasian provides the first comprehensive history of the conflict\, from 2001 to 2020. He is a board member at a variety of institutions; an independent consultant; and a world-wide commentator on military strategy and related issues. The speaker is Sarah C. M. Paine\, a William S. Sims University Professor of History and Grand Strategy at the U.S. Naval War College. Her talk is entitled: “How Russia Lost the Last Cold War.”  \nProfessor Paine\, William S. Sims University Professor of History and Grand Strategy at the U.S. Naval War College\, is a brilliant speaker and a scholar. Her publications\, based on ten years of research in Australia\, Britain\, China\, Japan\, Russia\, and Taiwan\, include: The Japanese Empire (Cambridge\, 2017); Wars for Asia\, 1911-1949 (Cambridge\, 2012\, Leopold Prize and PROSE award)\, The Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895 (Cambridge\, 2003)\, and Imperial Rivals: China\, Russia\, and Their Disputed Frontier (M. E. Sharpe\, 1996\, Jelavich prize). She has also co/edited books on nation building\, strategic communication\, blockades\, naval coalitions\, peripheral operations\, commerce raiding\, and naval soft power; and co-written with Bruce Elleman a China textbook (1644-present). The Economist featured her in The World Ahead 2025 special edition. Her podcasted interview and lectures with Dwarkesh Patel have millions of viewers. The unit was formed in 1942 in Texas and trained there for two years. 2Lt Jackie Robinson (later of the Brooklyn Dodgers) was one of the original members. But did not accompany the 761st to Europe. The unit deployed to Europe immediately after D-Day 1944 and entered the continent at Omaha Beach in October. \nGeneral Patton requested the unit be assigned to his Army\, and the 761st entered combat on 7 Nov 44 in Northern France. They participated in the Battle of the Bulge as part of Patton’s force that dashed to Bastogne to assist the 101st Airborne Division. The Battalion fought on the front lines for 183 straight days without ever being moved back to R&R locations. After Bastogne\, the battalion supported the 87th Infantry’s efforts to breach the Siegfried Line and advance into Germany. The unit received a Presidential Unit Citation from President Jimmie Carter. SSG Ruben Rivers was awarded the Medal of Honor.
