SUMMARY:January 7 Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe first untethered hot air balloon lifted off in 1783 followed by the first woman to fly in it the next year.  Aviation itself\, flying an airplane\, does not necessarily discriminate with the pilot at the controls.  The first woman to receive her pilot’s license was Raymonde de Laroche in 1911 just 8 years after the Wright Brother’s proved sustained flight was possible.  While women have always been involved with aviation\, it took several decades before they were allowed by law to fly anything in the military inventory.  In recent history\, women now fly and served in all aircraft in military service.  This is the story of Three Generations of Women Military Aviators.

SUMMARY:Military History Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Please arrive by 7:30 a.m. to order from the menu.  Breakfast is $15.  Discussion starts at 7:30 and ends at 9:00 a.m. \nThe discussion will be moderated by Robert Epstein: Texas Guard- Military Police Brigade; Civil Air Patrol University Instructor and Marc Liebman\, Captain\, U.S. Navy (retired)\, Naval Aviator\, award winning author and historian \nIn June 1944\, the U.S. launched a crushing assault on the Japanese Navy in the Battle of the Philippine Sea. The capture of the Marianas and the accompanying elimination of Japanese carrier air power marked a pivotal point in the Pacific War. No tactical masterstroke or blunder could reverse the increasingly lopsided balance of power between the two combatants. The War in the Pacific had entered is end game. \nBeginning with the Honolulu Conference\, when FDR met with Nimitz and MacArthur to plan the last phase of the campaign against Japan. Twilight of the Gods brings to life the last year of the war in the Pacific when the U.S. Navy won the largest naval battle in history. MacArthur made good his pledge to return to the Philippines; waves of Kamikazes attacked the Allied Fleets; the Japanese fought to the last man on one island after another; B-29s burned Japanese cities; and Hiroshima and Nagasaki were obliterated. \nIan Toll’s narrative of combat in the air\, at sea and on land are gripping as ever. He also reconstructs the Japanese and American home fronts and takes the reader into the halls of power in Washington and Tokyo where diplomacy and strategy were debated. \nRSVP to Bob Epstein at: macabee1948@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Military Book Club Breakfast Series
DESCRIPTION:Prestonwood CC\, 15909 Preston Road\, Dallas\, TX.  Please arrive by 7:30 a.m. to order from the menu.  Breakfast is $15.  Discussion starts at 7:30 and ends at 9:00. \nThe discussion will be guided by Robert Epstein: Texas Guard – Military Police Brigade; Civil Air Patrol University Instructor. \nYonah Bob and Ilan Evyatar describe how Israel has used cyberwarfare\, targeted assassinations\, and sabotage of Iranian facilities to great effect\, sometimes in cooperation with the United States. Even as it takes lethal action\, Israel has managed to alter the politics of the Middle East\, culminating in the Abraham Accords of 2020. Arab states such as Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates normalized relations with Israel\, and the holy grail of normalization with Saudi Arabia may yet be achieved. Despite the war with Hamas\, these Arab states share Israel’s concern about Iran\, remaining silent while Israel undermines Iran’s nuclear program. \nBob and Evyatar reveal how Israel has used documents stolen from Tehran in a daring\, secret Mossad raid to show the United States and the International Atomic Energy Agency how Iran has repeatedly violated the 2015 JCPOA nuclear agreement and lied about its active nuclear weapons program. Drawing from interviews with top confidential Israeli and US sources\, including from the Mossad and the CIA\, the authors tell the thrilling inside story of the tumultuous\, and often bloody\, history of how Israel has managed to outmaneuver Iran—so far. \nBreaking News: https://www.cnn.com/2024/11/22/world/iran-iaea-centrifuges-censure-intl-hnk/index.html \nIran announced Friday it was activating new advanced centrifuges – which enrich uranium for the country’s nuclear program – after the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog criticized the country for not cooperating with the agency. \nMore Breaking News:  https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/iran-orders-new-advanced-nuclear-centrifuges-to-be-brought-on-stream-after-iaea-censure/ar-AA1uzg4F \nRSVP to Bob Epstein @ macabee1948@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Military History Book Club April 10
DESCRIPTION:Black Saturday – October 7\, 2023   by Trey Yingst \nPrestonwood CC\, 15909 Preston Road\, Dallas\, TX. Please arrive by 7:30 a.m. to order from the menu.  Breakfast is $15.  Discussion starts at 7:30 and ends at 9:00. \nThe discussion will be guided by Robert Epstein:  Texas Guard- Military Police Brigade; Civil Air Patrol University Instructor \nOn the morning of October 7\, 2023\, the militant group  Hamas attacked Israel in the most recent stage of the deeply complicated and decades-long Israel-Palestine conflict. The assault\, which took place on Shabbat—the day of rest for the Jewish people—instantly became known among Israelis and the world as “Black Saturday.” \nFox News Correspondent Trey Yingst was on the ground along the Gaza border and witnessed firsthand the devastation\, shock\, and deep sorrow that whirled through Israel. A seasoned journalist who has reported from some of the most dangerous hotspots around the world\, including the frontlines in Ukraine\, Afghanistan\, and Pakistan\, Yingst was just one among many people plunged into the terrifying chaos of that horrific event. In this eye-opening chronicle\, he pieces together the story of that tragic day and reveals how he risked his life searching for answers to essential questions in real time–who within Israel had been attacked; what happened to them; who\, potentially\, was next–while exploring the impact on both Israelis and Palestinians as a full-scale war ramps up and peace grows more elusive. “We have a responsibility now to account for and record these events—and tell the world the truth\,” Yingst writes. “We cannot look away.” \nCommitted to reporting the truth\, on both sides of the border\, Yingst interviewed a range of exclusive contacts to incorporate multiple perspectives. From conversations with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and high-ranking soldiers\, to interviews with Senior Hamas official Dr. Bassem Naim\, to heartbreaking accounts from civilians placed in the crosshairs of the attack and the conflict that followed\, Yingst takes us inside the newest phase of an old war in which thousands of people—men\, women\, and children—are suffering and dying. \nYingst paints a vivid picture of the horrors and violence\, matched by acts of courage and humanity that cut through the darkness. \nRSVP to Bob Epstein at: macabee1948@gmail.com

SUMMARY:A Salute to Vietnam Veterans
DESCRIPTION:In April 1975\, as North Vietnamese forces approached Sàigòn\, South Vietnam neared collapse. With nearly all American troops gone since 1973\, the remaining personnel carried out Operation FREQUENT WIND to evacuate Americans\, foreign nationals\, and thousands of Vietnamese. \n \nMost evacuations occurred on April 29–30. Communist artillery fire damaged Tân Sơn Nhứt Air Base runways\, making fixed-wing evacuations impossible. Over 800 U.S. Marines secured the area while Navy\, Marine Corps\, Air Force\, and Army helicopters evacuated over 7\,000 people from various locations. A rocket attack during the final stages killed two Marines—the last American ground casualties in South Vietnam. Evacuees were transported to U.S. Seventh Fleet vessels offshore.

SUMMARY:2LT Thomas Max Nygaard Military Honors and Flag Presentation Ceremony to Alicia Formagus and family
DESCRIPTION:Please join us as we Honor 2LT Thomas Max Nygaard with a Flag Presentation Ceremony for Alicia Formagus and family during our May 6 Luncheon at the Park City club. We would like to encourage our members to join us for our May Luncheon and this brief ceremony. \n \nMOWW Member Thomas Max Nygaard\, a man of great intellect\, deep faith in his Lord Jesus Christ\, and boundless charm\, passed peacefully on February 6 at the age of 90\, holding the hand of his beloved wife of 65 years\, Shirley. Born in Haynesville\, Louisiana\, the son of a Danish immigrant\, Max studied violin at Juilliard and in Copenhagen before a broken finger during his Air National Guard service ended his musical aspirations. He went on to earn a law degree from the University of Texas and built a successful career in Dallas as an independent oil and gas operator. With a rare gift for bridging worlds\, Max could speak as comfortably with a roughneck on a rig as with the President of the United States. \n \nIn the late 1970s\, Max rallied early support for Ronald Reagan’s campaign in Texas and later served as a trusted advisor\, authoring key white papers—most notably on revitalizing the Chrysler Corporation. He led numerous civic and cultural boards in Dallas\, was devoted to his church\, family\, and community\, and cherished his role as “Papa” to his grandchildren. Max lived a life marked by loyalty\, wit\, and vision—leaving behind a legacy of love\, leadership\, and enduring friendships. His daughter\, MOWW Hereditary Member Alicia Formagus\, will be presented with the flag honoring her father’s service to our country. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Military History Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The American War in Afghanistan  –  Carter Malkasian – 2020 \nPrestonwood CC\, 15909 Preston Road\, Dallas\, TX. Please arrive by 7:30 a.m. to order from the menu.  Breakfast is $15.  Discussion: from 7:30 to 9:00 \nFacilitator –  Robert Epstein: Texas Guard- Military Police Brigade; Civil Air Patrol University Instructor.  \nThe American war in Afghanistan\, which began in 2001\, was the longest armed conflict in our history. This book is a comprehensive history of the war\, arguing that one of the main reasons for the Taliban’s success was their deep connection to the religious and social identity of Afghanistan\, and that the inability of the American-supported Afghan government to attract popular support and retain control of the country was due to Afghans’ viewing the American military as a foreign occupying power. “The very presence of Americans in Afghanistan trod on what it meant to be Afghan… Any Afghan government\, however good\, however democratic\, was going to be imperiled as long as it was aligned with the United States.”  \nCarter Malkasian provides the first comprehensive history of the conflict\, from 2001 to 2020. Malkasian is both a leading academic authority on the subject and an experienced practitioner\, having spent nearly two years working in the Afghan countryside and later serving as the senior advisor to General Joseph Dunford\, the US military commander in Afghanistan and later the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.  Drawing from a deep well of local knowledge\, understanding of Pashto\, and review of primary source documents\, Malkasian moves through the war’s multiple phases: the 2001 invasion and after; the light American footprint during the 2003 Iraq invasion; the resurgence of the Taliban in 2006\, the Obama-era surge\, and the various resets in strategy and force allocations that occurred from 2011 onward\, culminating in the 2018-2020 peace talks. Malkasian lived through much of it\, and draws from his own experiences to provide a unique vantage point on the war. Today\, the Taliban rules Afghanistan.  Although Osama bin Laden was killed and no major attack on the American homeland was carried out after 2001\, the United States was unable to end the violence or successfully hand off the war to the Afghan government\, which collapsed without US military backing.  \nKabul airport evacuation\, August 2021: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_Kabul_airlift \n12 Strong:  https://www.amazon.com/12-Strong-Declassified-Story-Soldiers/dp/1501178512 \nRSVP to Bob Epstein at: macabee1948@gmail.com.

Breakfast is $20. Discussion begins at 7:30 and ends no later than 9:00. \nModerated by COL (ret) JP Hogan\, Director of Leadership Development North Texas Audie Murphy Chapter \nTaiwan is a flourishing Democracy and an economic success story. Just one company\, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC)\, produces a significant majority of the world’s semiconductor chips. The island is a bastion of freedom against the PRCs assertive presence in the region. The PRC is becoming increasingly bellicose under Wi Jinping\, insisting that the island is part of the PRC. The US\, in turn\, treats the issue of One China in vague terms but hints at the need to preserve Taiwan as the bastion of freedom. Should China blockade the island or mount an invasion\, it could easily create a chain reaction escalating to regional and perhaps global war.
