SUMMARY:Luncheon Meeting July 2026
DESCRIPTION:Mrs. Jennifer\, Lieutenant Colonel\, Thomas Nguyen (RVN) & Family\nMrs. Jennifer\, Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Nguyen\, and their family of six —citizens of the Republic of Vietnam—entered April 29\, 1975\, known as “Black April\,” facing fierce and grueling challenges. Thomas\, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Republic of Vietnam Air Force\, watched from the cockpit of his F-5E Tigershark as North Vietnamese soldiers and tanks overran Saigon. Narrowly escaping in a bullet-riddled aircraft\, LTC Nguyen flew safely to U-Tapao Royal Thai Navy Airfield\, Thailand. Forced to leave his family behind\, he did so only after ensuring evacuation plans for them were underway. \nOn April 22\, 1975\, worried for her family’s safety\, Jennifer reported to work as rockets and bombs fell nearby. Understanding the impending fall of his country\, Thomas sent his driver to retrieve Jennifer and the children for evacuation by U.S. military forces. Told only that it was a short vacation\, Jennifer did not realize she and the children were leaving behind everything they had ever known.  Read more…

SUMMARY:Military History Book Club – July 2026
DESCRIPTION:Where are the WMDs? – Al Mauroni\n  \nThomas Woloszyn –  Colonel Tom Woloszyn\, USA\, Ret. retired after a 30-year Army career and recently  retired from the Department of the Army where his last assignment was the Civilian Deputy of Dugway Proving Ground\, Utah. Tom is a specialist in Nuclear\, Chemical\, Biological weapons Radiological Defense officer and an Army strategist. \nThere are many books on the Iraq war and on WMD-type issues\, but this is the first to offer a historical overview of chemical-biological defense issues and a policy analysis of how the U. S. government addresses the threat of weapons of mass destruction and how ground forces deal with the problem on the battlefield. Al Mauroni looks at how the 9/11 disaster forced the Department of Defense to review its management of chemical\, biological\, radiological\, and nuclear (CBRN) defense equipment and then make significant changes. He outlines in detail the government’s decision to invade Afghanistan and Iraq and search for WMDs. The fact that no such weapons were found\, the author explains\, has had dramatic consequences for how U.S. military forces address the use of nuclear\, biological\, and chemical weapons in Iraq and how they support the federal response to terrorist incidents involving these weapons at home. Mauroni draws on two decades of experience in the area of chemical-biological defense policy to present this comprehensive analysis of the decision-making process within the Department of Defense and the actions of U.S. forces in the second Iraq War. Explaining that WMD is no longer a useful term for the threat faced by military leaders and emergency professionals\, he also outlines a number of lessons learned from the conflicts in the Middle East and offers recommendations on how to improve CBRN defense for the future. This book is published with the cooperation of the Association of the United States Army. of the invasion plan and its subsequent execution from D-Day in March 2003 until the change of command of operations in Iraq and the departure of Third Army in June 2003. \nPlease arrive by 7:30 a.m. to   order from the menu.  Breakfast is $15.  Discussion: from 7:30 to 9:00 \nRSVP to Bob Epstein at: macabee1948@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Military History Book Club - Oct 2026
DESCRIPTION:“Afghanistan”\n  \nSponsored by Dallas – Chapter Military Order of the World Wars\n  \nCarl is a combat veteran of Desert Shield/Storm\, the Gulf War\, Operation Joint Endeavor\, Former Yugoslavia\, who retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel and Government Civil Service after 40 years of service. He is a senior Army aviator with over one thousand hours in helicopters\, a paratrooper\, a cavalryman\, and a maintenance test pilot. He currently serves as the Second Vice-Commander for the Dallas – Military Order of World Wars chapter. Carl speaks on military history from World War I to the current day\, as well as selected topics on logistics and military deployments. \n  \nIn late 2005\, the total casualties in Afghanistan were just barely over one hundred; meanwhile\, the news agencies were publicizing\, each day\, the thousands of American soldiers who were dying in Iraq. There was rarely any mention at all of the conflict going on in Afghanistan. Little did Daniel Flores know that one year later he would be witness to the Taliban resurgence and lose some of his friends in the war. He was locked in a battle for his life against a determined enemy\, in one of the most notorious and highly contested valleys in the Hindu Kush\, in his Apache gunship without bullets. South of Heaven is the searing memoir of Flores year-long tour of duty in Afghanistan. One of his missions was featured in a segment on the Military Channels My War Diary program. \nRSVP: Bob Epstein\, macabee1948@gmail.com
