The border between the United States and Mexico has been a flash point for years and is a particular issue for border states like Texas, where the impacts of the immigrant flow are obvious. This program will feature speakers who have been intimately involved with the situation on the border from policy, law enforcement, and military perspectives. While this issue is politically charged, we’ll try to have a non-political, non-partisan discussion, exploring facts and solutions rather than assessing blame. Congressman Self will moderate the discussion.
Congressman Self is a West Point graduate and a 25-year veteran of the US Army. He served for 11 years as the Collin County judge and was elected as the US Congress representative from the Texas 3rd Congressional District last year. He serves on the Committees on Foreign Affairs and Veterans Affairs.
Sheriff Jim Skinner has served one of Texas’s fastest-growing counties since 2017. He is nationally recognized for his leadership in several important law enforcement areas, including combatting human and drug trafficking and child exploitation. His career in law enforcement has spanned 32 years, and he served for eight years in the US Air Force.
General Barker is the Commander of Joint Task Force Lone Star, activated in 2021 by Governor Abbott to assist the Texas Department of Public Safety in their mission to provide security along the Texas-Mexico border. He previously served as the Chief of Staff at, Texas Air National Guard, and in his 31-year career has served in the United States and Europe in various command staff positions.
