Jerry Singleton attended pilot training at Webb Air Force Base in Big Spring, Texas after graduating from the Air Force Academy. He then completed advanced helicopter training after which he was sent to Southeast Asia. There he was assigned to an Air Base in Northern Thailand flying rescue missions over North Vietnam. While on such a mission flying a CH-3C (Radio Call sign “Jolly Green”) on November 6, 1965, he was shot down over North Vietnam. After evading the enemy for five days he was captured by the North Vietnamese. Jerry was held as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam for more than seven years. He was released on February 12, 1973.
